The responsibility for management and coordination of examinations varies depending on the examination period and the type of examination, and whether a central exam or school-based exam is required.

As indicated in the table below, mid-semester examinations are generally fully managed by the School.  The only exception is for those examinations approved by the President of the Academic Board to be held on a Saturday, in which case the exams are timetabled and allocated to a venue by the Examinations Section.  The reason these Saturday examinations are scheduled by the Examinations Section is primarily to avoid student timetable clashes.   The Examinations Section is also involved in mid-semester examinations for students sitting under alternative examination arrangements.
The Examinations Section will also arrange for exam supervisors for mid-semester examinations held on Saturdays, and these costs will be charged back to the School.  The Schools will be responsible for all other management of the examinations – e.g. printing papers and having papers and materials available at the exam venue on the day.
Final end of semester examinations which are written examinations, should be set as central examinations.  Examinations with a practical component (e.g. lab work, computer lab) should be school-based examinations. Regardless of whether central or school examinations, all end of semester examinations are timetabled by the Examinations Section to avoid student timetable clashes.  Students are provided with an individual examination timetable for all examinations scheduled by the Examinations Section.
To clarify, for a school-based end of semester examination in June, the Examinations Section will allocate the date and time.  The School will arrange the venue.  The venue can be listed on the published version of the final examination timetables if notification is received prior to publication of the timetable.
